Certicate in applied basic counselling skils

Asha Counselling and Training Services

Asha Counselling and Training Services is the maiden programme of Centre for Holistic Integrated Learning and Development (CHILD), a public charitable trust, which is engaged in providing counselling and training services for better living of humankind. Asha is also engaged in organizing events and conferences for the dissemination of transactional analysis, as a field of human growth and development.

Our primary objective is to provide systematic and scientific counselling and psychotherapy to improve quality of life of people and to offer on-going training programmes to develop counselors and counselling skills. We have been training counsellors, psychotherapists, educators and organisational trainers and consultants in India, Bangladesh, Ukraine, Iran and Turkey since our inception in 1998. This training prepares professionals to the international certification as Certified Transactional Analyst (CTA).

However, of late we realised the need for basic counselling skills amongst various professionals in the helping fields like health care, mental health, education, social work and human resource development. This is not for them to establish a practice as counsellors, but to add value and human touch to their professional services they provide their clients, by integrating these skills in whatever they do. This Certificate in Applied Basic Counselling Skills is designed to fulfill this need.

Who is this course for?

The Applied Basic Counselling Skills Certificate Course is for those who:

  • Want to expand and deepen their communication skills to enhance their current professional and personal life
  • Wish to embark on a career in counselling
  • Seek skills to stimulate and support change and growth
  • Are seeking to gain personal development, and heightened awareness
  • Are health professionals and human services providers such as doctors, therapists, nurses, teachers, HR professionals, lawyers and others who are interacting with the public daily and wish to improve their interpersonal skills.

Course Format

The course involves attendance for 10 weekends per year at Asha - generally during the second weekend of every month. A minimum attendance of 75% is mandatory. Distance learning methods are used between contact sessions and include:

The practical module will be for 60 hours in contact session and additional 60 hours pre and post practical preparation and reporting work.

Certificate

The certificate course is for those who want to improve their communication and counselling skills while also developing their own self-awareness. Trainees can expect improvement in both their working relationships and their personal lives. You will gain an understanding of the origin and principles of various models of counselling. You will become familiar with and able to apply Basic Counselling skills. You will demonstrate a fluency in basic counselling skills and understand authenticity in relationships. You will also gain tools to enable your ongoing self development. The certificate includes three modules - two theory modules and one practical - details as follow. After successful completion you will attain a certificate of attendance.

The Certificate does not qualify you as a Counsellor, but provides you the Basic Counselling Skills that could augment your current professional skills to make you a better professional and person.

Diploma

The Diploma is for those who wish to take the certificate level further and to work as a counsellor. Upon completion of the Diploma level graduates will be able to apply Advanced Counselling Skills in complex situations and be able to demonstrate developed relationship skills.

The diploma includes modules 1-8 as follows.
CTA
Certified Transactional Analyst

Module 1

Models of Counselling (30 + 60 hours)
  • Carl Roger's Non-directive Counselling
  • Karkhoff's Client-centered Counselling
  • Fritz Perls's Gestalt Counselling
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Egan Model of Counselling

You gain knowledge of the development of the field of counselling and the emergence of some major schools of counselling through the last century. Active dialogue and the critical examination of approaches to counselling are encouraged.

Module 2

Transactional Analysis Counselling (30 + 60 hours)
  • Origins and structure of personal problems
  • Transactional analysis model of personality
  • Intake procedure
  • Systematic treatment plan
  • Contract for change
  • Interventions for change
  • Criteria for termination

The principles of transactional analysis are applied to develop counselling skills, in particular, the skills to contract and diagnose - identify and unfold relevant issues. Emphasis is on learning to find the door to the process that holds the key to the issues. It is in this unfolding process that understanding grows and change can occur. Through the context of a meaningful relationship between counsellor and client, the process flows and solutions for change arise freely.

Module 3

Application of Basic Counselling Skills (60 + 60 hours)

Essential counselling skills are examined. The micro skills of counselling such as contracting, diagnosis, active listening, empathy, unconditional positive regard, quality of relationship, probing, challenging and presence, will be learnt and practiced in the context of authenticity in relationship. These skills are placed within the transactional analysis and Egan models, which provides a structure moving through a counselling framework and transactional analysis approach to counselling. These skills are then developed and applied to a holistic understanding of the human condition.

Skills are worked with experientially to develop fluency. Live practice and immediate supervision is mandatory. Peer and critical self-reflection are used to enhance learning.

GLOSSARY

What is TA - Transactional Analysis? Transactional Analysis (TA) is a psychological and social theory with mutual contracting for growth and change. Originated by Dr. Eric Berne M.D. in the late 1950's ,TA is applicable to situations as diverse as psychotherapy for mildly to severely disturbed individuals, couples and families; the education of children and adolescents; and consultation of management training in government and business organization.

What is DTA - Developmental Transactional Analysis? Developmental TA is concerned with applying TA in the process of change and growth at the personal, professional, group and organisational levels. It is the term now used to refer to the non-therapy fields of application of TA, combining the organisational, educational, and (non-therapeutic) counselling applications.

These three specializations have much in common. They focus on using TA in a way that involves sharing (teaching) the models and concepts with clients and working with (facilitating) them to increase their self-understanding and hence their behavioural options. Clients are also encouraged to understand the structures and processes that operate within groups, teams, organisations and institutions.

DTA uses the therapeutic models translated to create a potent and practical approach that equips people to become autonomous - and to help others to do the same. It is therefore ideally suited for trainers, educators, consultants, counsellors, mentors, managers, coaches and others who have responsibilities for the development of individuals, teams, and organisations.

Dr. Eric Berne(1910-1970) : Eric Berne M.D. was the founder and developer of TA. His intent was the most brief, most economical way for his clients to increase their autonomy by reawakening their potential for awareness, spontaneity, and intimacy-capacities, which are inherent in all of us.

ITAA - International Transactional Analysis Association: The ITAA (Founded by Eric Berne M.D.) is the international forum for evolving new TA theory and methods and an ethical framework. ITAA is dedicated to facilitating international communication among people and groups who use Transactional Analysis. The ITAA works to build understanding , knowledge and acceptance of TA, and provide theoreticians and practitioners with techniques of proven value for enriching life.

Asha Counselling And Training Services: CHILD is a public charitable trust. Asha is its maiden project. Asha provides systematic and scientific counselling and psychotherapy; conducts training programmes to develop counsellors and to create awareness among the public; disseminates the principles and use of transactional analysis for personal growth, change and relationship enhancement; reaches out to rural areas to create awareness and empowerment; undertakes projects for upliftment of women and economically and socially deprived segments of society.

Relations - developmental TA facilitators: Relations was founded with the mission to provide value-based training and consultancy to organisations for organisational development through effective human relations management, and to be an active partner in the growth and dissemination of TA in India and abroad. Relations have increasingly diversified into related developmental areas of industrial counselling and management education. Professional goals include improving relationships and teamwork in organisations and creating healthy organisational culture. Social goals include spreading the philosophy and applications of TA through training professionals in developmental TA.

T&CC- Training and Certification Council of Transactional Analysts Inc.: T&CC is constituted by the BOC and TSC. It is the worldwide training and certifying body for professional TA application. T&CC operates in close association with the ITAA.

BOC- Board Of Certification: The BOC coordinates and conducts exams all over the world and is authorised to certify qualified candidates who could practice TA application in all parts of the world.

TSC- Training Standards Committee : The role of TSC is to register and coordinate training in TA around the world. The TSC works in close coordination with the BOC. TSC also sets the standards and periodically updates the syllabus and requirements of the CTA and TSTA exams.

CTA - Certified Transactional Analyst : This is the first level certification Candidates who wish to take up this exam has to under go continuous training with a supervisor and appear for a written and oral exam, after fulfilling all the requirements put forth by the BOC and the TSC. CTAs can apply TA in their field of work, but cannot train others to become CTAs.

PTSTA- Provisional Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst: CTAs who fulfill the requirements put forth by the BOC and the TSC have to undergo a Training Endorsement Workshop (TEW) conducted by the BOC. Those who successfully complete the TEW can sign a TSTA contract with a TSTA and will be called the PTSTA. PTSTAs can teach, train and give supervision under the supervision of a TSTA.

TSTA- Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst: PTSTAs who fulfill the requirements put forth by the BOC and TSC have to appear for a 3-round exam. Those who pass this shall become TSTAs and are authorized to train people to become CTAs and TSTAs and teach TA independently.

Children Learn What They Live

Secrets of Effective Parenting

Children are mirrors of their environment. Therefore, parents have a major influence in moulding their children's personality. Often parents end up doing and saying things to their children which they never wanted to. And they ask these questions:

  • Why is my child so rebellious and unruly?
  • Why is my child so shy and not an extrovert?
  • Why is my child not as good as the other?
  • Why do my children always fight and quarrel amongst each other?
  • Why am I often helpless in controlling my child's excesses?
  • Where on earth did my child pick up these habits; this language; these manners?
  • Why do I often end up quarreling with my child?
  • Why do my children not understand that all I'm doing is for their good?
  • I have hurt my children in the past, what can I do about it now?
  • Why does my child love to spend more time out with his friends than at home?
  • How do I understand my adolescent child?

In this workshop, you shall find answers to several such questions lingering in your mind. You will understand the basics of child development like:

  • What is normal for a child in each stage of development
  • What can parents do to help the child develop healthily in each stage
  • What behaviours of parents could be detrimental to the healthy growth of the child's psyche
  • How can parents compensate in later stages, for what has been deprived at an earlier stage and so on.. because in parenting, its never too late! Limited participants. Registration will be on first come first serve basis.
Register early to ensure your admission.

Asha SAHAY

Parent Support Group

Parenting a child can sometimes be an overwhelming experience. Whenever there's a loss of hopes and dreams, whenever you are not sure if you are doing the right thing, whenever you confront the reality that "something is different, something is not alright" with your child, you experience various feelings, such as grief, shock, guilt, anger, frustration, confusion, depression. All these are common and you are not alone in this struggle. There are several parents who battle these feelings daily along with trying to understand, cope with and help their children. Asha invites parents to join the Parent Support Group (PSG), get actively involved in this forum and make it their own.

Asha SAHAY addresses issues at fortnightly meetings conducted at the Center, where parents can share their experiences, ask questions, discuss their problems and find direction. The PSG is facilitated by professional counsellors and psychotherapists.

Script Analysis

Transactional Analysis to explore your life plan

Script Analysis 'All the world is a stage and all men and women are but players'

-Shakespeare

Eric Berne, MD, Founder of Transactional Analysis said, The destiny of every human being is decided by what goes on inside his skull when he is confronted with what goes on outside his skull. Each person designs his own life. Freedom gives him the power to carry out his own designs, and power gives him the freedom to interfere with the design of others.

'Each person decides in early childhood how he will live and how he will die, and that plan, which he carries in his head wherever he goes, is called his script.'

In this workshop you will be able to explore some aspects of your script and find ways to be in charge of your life and redecide to chart out your future course the way you want it to be.

No prior knowledge of Transactional Analysis is needed to attend this workshop, even though it may be desirable.
